During the Behavior Design minor, we were put into groups and given an assignment from a client. My group consisted of me and two classmates, and we were tasked with increasing the number of projects signing up for an initiative called the GGCA, created by the client. The client, an organization within the college, strives to promote and enhance sustainability in student projects. The GGCA is an award show that showcases student sustainability projects and rewards them with a big fat prize at the end. Our job: increase the number of projects signing up for the GGCA.

My team and I conducted research using methods from the SUE Behavioral Design Academy. We explored users’ motivations, anxieties, and comforts, and used the insights to develop a detailed plan with multiple behavioral interventions. We decided to host an annual Sustainability Day event to educate students at my college (our target audience) about sustainability and the initiative our client had set up. Additionally, we planned a simple poster campaign to build brand identity and recognition among students. Lastly, we designed an app that provided information about sustainability, details about the GGCA, and an easy way for students to sign up.
Typically, I would focus on visuals and design, but I took the lead on this project because my teammates were struggling with personal challenges at home. While I still created most of the illustrations due to my experience, my teammates worked on the app’s interface (the screens shown here are my work). Meanwhile, I managed communications with the client, presented our work, refined our concepts into fully functional interventions, and documented our process, decisions, interventions, and iterations in a detailed project report.
It was difficult to step back from some of the design work my teammates were handling, but it was the right decision for the project. In the end, they did a great job, and while teamwork had its challenges, it was ultimately a rewarding experience.
I love working together and combining strengths to create something that wouldn’t be possible alone. However, in this project, our roles weren’t clearly defined from the start, which caused some confusion. In the future, establishing roles beforehand would make the process smoother and less bumpy.
This project was both challenging and rewarding. Our client was extremely enthusiastic about our work and even asked me to continue working with them. In summary: a successful project and a happy client.
